LITTLE 6 YEAR OLD GIRL OF WARREN A BACON DIED LAST SUNDAY NIGHT
After a continued illness extending over about two months, little Marie, the six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Bacon died at her home in the southwest part of town at 9:00 o'clock p.m. Little Marie was a most beautiful child, the idol of the family, and it is indeed sad to give her up, at this tender age, she was loved by all and the entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
The remains of the little one were laid to rest in the Lubbock Cemetery at 2:oo Monday evening in the presence of a large crowd of friends and relatives, after funeral services, by Rev. G. B. Overton. The following poem was written and handed to us with the request that the authors name be held:
A TRIBUTE TO LITTLE MARIE
Our precious child of tender years, with curls of golden hair.
Has anchored at the Crystal Sea, and left a vacant chair
Although her loving little heart, so free from every care
We can but look with soleman that, upon that vacant chair
When Christmas greeting comes again our darling won't be there,
and we will view with throbbing hearts. That little vacant chair
The wiltered rose will bloom again, its fragrance fill the air.
But sweet Marie will never come, to fill the vacant chair.
Her little trinkets laid away, her clothes she used to wear.
Will call to mind the precious one, that left a vacant chair.
We trust to meet her some sweet day, beyond the Golden Stairs.

Pioneer Succumbs - Mrs. Suzan Berry Claimed by Death at Ropesville
Mrs. Marla Susan Berry, 79-year-old pioneer West Texan, died at 6:30 o'clock Tuesday morning at her home of a daughter, Mrs. S. B. Pierson, of Ropesville, after an illness of several months.
Funeral rites will be conducted at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the First Christian church here, Rev. Walter P. Jennings, pastor of the First Church, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Jasper Bogue, of Amarillo. Burial will be in Lubbock cemetery under direction of Bynum-Morgan funeral home.
Mrs. Berry had lived at Ropesville the last six years. She was a member of the Christian church.

BRABHAM, NELL
The home of James L. Brabham and wife was made happy on the fifth day of Feb 1920, by the coming from God's fingertips one of his sweetest Jewels in the form of "Little Nell." That flower, the flower of all flowers, was taken from us the night of Friday, November the 25th, 1921. Little Nell was suddenly taken ill two weeks previous to this date, and during those two weeks everything that human skill could do was done in order to fight back the onward fight of death. Father, Mother and loved ones watched closely, hoping and praying that the Alwise One might see fit to spare the precious flower. As death drew near and we saw for the last time that sweet smile, which always meant so much to us, we realized that only a few more hours and her little soul would take it's flight to that place where pain would never again touch her precious little body. At last death finally came, we gathered around her with broken hearts and the dark cloud of sadness pressed heavily upon us; but in that dark hour of heart aches and sorrow the thought came, that while our home had been made one of sadness and sorrow, heaven had been made brighter, due to the fact that one of God's brightest Jewels had been added to the band of little Angels. Death that comes and plucks from us one of the sweetest flowers, we cannot explain. Looking through this veil of tears we wonder why? Some day the veil will be lifted and we can see tje great beyond, and then understand. Now, we walk out in the darkness of night, look towards the skies and realize that beyond that beautifully decked firmament is our precious Little darling Nell. As death came I walked out of the scene to be alone, standing there thinking of death with all of it's blackness, this picture came: As death was claiming that precious Child, God in Heaven called around Him the brightest little angels of His kingdom. Sent them forth to bring back His Jewel Nell. Through space they dashed. The gates were thrown open, the greatest merry making that has ever been made was made that night by the little angels themselves: because Little Nell, the brightest of all angels had been added to that heavenly band. The brightest flower that has ever bloomed on earth, bursted forth in the life of Little Nell. The sweetest, the dearest and grandest of all children. Whenever she went, she was the means of making merry even the gloomest. No despondent feeling could long live in the breast of any one when she was around. Oh! how we loved her. Often times when we felt blue and down hearted we would go and get Little Nell. In her own way, she would soon have us gripped in the power of her personality and heaven seemed, even then to come just a little closer. She was loved and admited by all. Whoever she went, she was the center of attraction and we all realized that no other had ever been like Her. As I sit and write this little memory of her, in my mind I see her, sitting with her little heavenly playmates, she in the center entertaining and making merry the little angels that surround her. How much brighter heaven has been made, eternity can only tell. Early in life she was taken and we wonder why? But that influence of her sweet life has left a lasting impression. Heaven has become more real and doesn't seen so far away. She is looking this way, waiting to join us around the great white throne of God. Like David of old, we look up and say, Little Nell, we cannot will you back to us; bit we cam go to you. By the help of God, some day we will again take her in our arms, press her to our breast, in that land where the sun never goes down, and the dark clouds never rise. Where death never comes and heart aches and sorrows never known. Loved ones let this be our hope.
BROWN, ALTON
After an extended illness of about two months, death came last Tuesday night to claim Alton Brown at his home 15 miles east of Lubbock. The cause of his death is said to be from a complication of pneumonia and typhoid fever.
Alton was about 20 years of age and has been a resident of Lubbock county for several years. He was a son of J. T. Brown of this place and leaves a father and mother and younger sisters and brothers to mourn his departure form this life.
He was a member of the Woodmen of the World of Lubbock camp, and was buried in the Lubbock Cemetery, under the auspices of that order, after services at the Church of Christ, Elder Liff Sanders preaching the sermon. [Source: The Avalanche Dec 04, 1908. Transcribed by Danielle Swiney]

Cate died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Covenant of Plainview. He was born Oct. 26, 1906, in Madill, Okla. He married Millie Elizabeth Perry on Dec. 2, 1933, in Lubbock. She died June 10, 1990. He farmed in Littlefield, Abernathy, Tucumcari, N.M., and Plainview, retiring in 1971. He moved to Lubbock in 1971, and he returned to Plainview in may 1997. He was a Baptist. A daughter, Bessie Nell Cate, died Oct. 7, 1994. Joe L. Cate of Lubbock passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the age of 68. He was born Oct. 27, 1947, in Abernathy, Texas, to George and Millie (Perry) Cate. He married Carolyn Ellis on Jan. 11, 1968, in Lubbock. Joe was a mechanic supervisor for over 40 years with Farmers Co-Op. He served for nine years in the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam, he was honored with receiving the Bronze Star. Joe was a member of the Cotton Pickin Sams RV Club for 10 years. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolun; daughter, Tonya Ellerd and husband, Jim; son-in-law, Jeff Scott; six grandchildren; and five siblings. Mrs. Zillah P. Copp was born in Georgia. In early youth came to Texas where most of her years from youth to old age have been spent. She has lived in Lubbock county several years. About forty-five years ago she was married to W. T. Copp who died several years ago. She was the mother of four children, Mrs. Laura Bently, and Mr. J. E. Copp of Okla., and Mr. G. F. (Bud) Copp and Miss Linda Copp of Lubbock. In them she has left to society and her country a legacy, consisting not in money, but in well rounded characters to honor her name and perpetuate her memory in the world.
Her sojourn here was 65 years old. The last five or six years being years of great physical suffering and pain, but she endured it all without a murmur and patiently awaited the end, which came Jan 26 at 4:30 a.m. and her triumphant spirit took its flight from a local sanitarium in Lubbock to realms above. Slaton, Tex., Jan. 1 Frank J. Evans, division superintendent of the Slaton division of the Santa Fe Railway, with headquarters here, died today after a brief illness, from pneumonia. Mr. Evans was born at Valley Falls, Kan., where the body will be sent for burial. Before coming to the southwest he was in the employ of the Santa Fe at Emporia and Wichita, Kansas. Roland Gibson, 94, previously of Lubbock, died on Jan 12, 2012 in Weatherford, Texas. Memorial graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012 in Slaton, Texas at the Englewood Cemetery. Roland was born in Allenreed, Texas on November 18, 1917. Roland was preceded in death by his daughter, Jeannie McDonald: his son, Earnie Gibson: his parents; and one brothers and sister. Martha Kaye Gilbert was born April 27, 1950 in Lubbock, Texas to the late Zenobia and Frankie Robinson. She graduated form Slaton high School in 1969. Martha was preceded in death by her parents: one brother Sylvester Robinson: one sister, Evelyn McDaniel; Grandparents. She leaves to cherish her memory two brothers, Johnny Robinson and Donald Robinson; five sisters, Shirley Mask, Rita Knighten, Christine Robinson, Coretta Wilborn and Cynthia Robinson; one sister-in-law, Ruby Nell Robinson; five aunts, Violet Rouse, Verse Johnson, Sylvia Barnett, Viree Palmer and Lerniene Dixion; nieces and nephews. Services for Alice Gryder, 82, of Lubbock will be at 10 a.m. Friday in W.W. Rix Chapel with the Rev. John Ballard, Associate pastor of First Baptist Church, Officiating. Burial will be in City of Lubbock Cemetery under direction of Rix Funeral Directors. She died Tuesday at her home. Justice of the Peace L.J. Blalock ruled the death due to Natural causes. She was born in Forney and moved to Breckenridge to Lubbock in 1937. She married J.L. Gryder on Dec. 24 1927 in Sherman. He died in 1966. She was a former Hemphill-Wells employee, retiring in 1982. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter. Mrs Gene Aicher of Lubbock; a brother Claude Howell of Dallas; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. After a heroic effort to regain his failing health, Jesse Edward Hammett, aged 60 years, 4 months and 28 days, died here Saturday. Mr. Hammett moved here with his wife and three children two weeks ago from Delta County, Texas, hoping that the change in climate would strengthen him, but all efforts of his family, friends and physicians failed to accomplish this aim. Deceased was a loved and respected member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge, and Sunday afternoon the remains were laid to rest in the Lubbock Cemetery by members of that lodge, after Rev. C. N. N. Mrs. Cora Harris was born May 15, 1876 in Hill County, Texas, Died February 9, 1920 in Lubbock, Texas. She was married to Mr. J. H. Harris September 1894. To this union one boy was born, J. H. Harris, Jr. She became a member of the Christian church a number of years ago and lived a faithful consecrated, Christian life until she was called to her Heavenly home. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, a devoted sister, a true friend, an earnest Christian. She leaves a father, W. L. Powell, of Hubbard City; a son, J. H. Harris, Jr., of Lubbock; three brothers, J. J. and W. B. Powell of Lubbock, and T. P. Powell of Hubbard City and a host of loving friends to mourn her death. Lewis R. Hastings Dies in Lubbock, Tex., from Apoplectic Stroke Received Several Weeks Ago
Lewis R. Hastings, a widely known stockman and old resident of Chicago died in Lubbock, Tex., yesterday from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy received several weeks ago. He was 70 years old. Frank Hastings, a stockman of Essex, Ia., and the son of Mr. Hastings, attended his father and was at his bedside when the end came. The body will be brought to Chicago. The funeral is expected to be held from his late residence, Forty-third street and Union Avenue. Burial will be at Oakwoods.
Mr. Hastings went to Texas a month ago to wind up the affairs of the stock firm of Gregory, Cooley & Hastings, which was dissolved at the time of the death of H. H. Cooley, a few weeks ago. Three members of the family survive Mr. Hastings. They are his eldest daughter, who is Mrs. John J. McRoberts, 4330 Emerald Avenue; his son Frank, and an unmarried daughter, Carrie.
Lewis R. Hastings was born in Ohio in the year 1830. When still in his youth he went West and there became known as an extensive shipper of cattle. He came to Chicago in the '60s, and received cattle here, trading at the Merrick Stock-Yards, then located on the South side on the lake front. Lubbock, Texas. - On Friday night last Sheriff Roberts of Lubbock shot to death Jim Haynes, in the hotel at Lubbock. There had been bad feelings between the parties for some time, growing out of politics. Haynes was once editor and proprietor of the Lubbock Avalanche. HINKLE, (AGES), BESSIE
Bessie, Ages, daughter of W. M. and V. A. Mullican was born at Union Hill Ellis County Texas, Oct. 31, 1884, where she lived till 12 years of age, when she moved with her parents to Dallas Texas.
At the age of fourteen she united with the East Dallas Christian church, being baptized by Rev. M. M. Davis, pastor of the church at that place. She beautified and adorned her life with the Christian graces and became a faithful and devoted worker in the church of our Lord until she was called home.
She was married to Harry W. Hinkle of Lynchburg, Tenn., 1905, and moved with him to this home at that place where she lived until 1910. When she moved with her husband to Pecos Texas, where she resided until her death which occurred while visiting her parents at Lubbock, Texas, Saturday, June 5th, 1920, at 9:30 a.m., she lacking a few months of being 36 years of age.
She leaves a husband, father, mother, one sister, two brothers and a host of friends to mourn her death. She was a consecrated Christian, a devoted wife, a loving daughter, a congenial sister, a kind and considerate friend. -V. L. Graves. Plainview, Sept. 28-Funeral services for B. F. Holloway, 87, resident of Plainview since 1856, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the First Methodist Church of Petersburg. Burial will be in Petersburg cemetery under direction of Wood Mitchell Funeral Home of Plainview. Mr. Holloway died at 4:40 p.m. today at his home here, 922 Baltimore Street. He was born Jan. 22, 1871, in Tennessee. He had been in ill health for about four years. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a former member of the Woodmen of the World. He was married to Louisa Read on Nov. 5, 1899, at Waxahachie. The couple moved to a farm south of Petersburg, just inside the Lubbock County line in 192_ from Chillicothe, Tex. In 1936 he moved to Plainview. Surviving are his wife of Plainview; five sons, R. L. of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bill of Petersburg, Alton of Plainview, Ernest of Midland, and J. M. Little Joseph William McDonald, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. McDonald, who live some 12 miles south of Lubbock, died Feb. 24, at the home of Mr. Curtis McDonald in Lubbock. He was 8 months and seven days old. Thus was a beautiful, sweet flower bloomed here but a day, just long enough to become the charm of the home. But providence allowed the little budding flower to be plucked up from this sinful world and transplanted in the city of God to live and bloom forever. After funeral service at the grave, conducted by the writer, we laid the remains away in the Lubbock cemetery to await the Resurrection. Death Takes Civic Leader Of Lubbock
Lubbock, Oct. 27--William Garrett McMillan, 60, construction company executive, big game hunter and ornithologist, died at 3:08 p.m. today in West Texas Hospital, where he had been critically ill for several days. He was the head of the W. G. McMillan and Son Construction Co. Mr. McMillan was widely known for his big-game hunting, for which he toured much of the world. He wrote a series of articles for the Sunday News-Globe in 1954, during his safari to northern India. He had many trophies from shooting contests across the Southwest. He was a student of ornithology and owned one of the rarest collections of bird eggs in Texas. Mr. McMillan was also interested in Indian Lore, natural history, outdoor life, architecture, photography and many civic activities. He was closely associated with Kiwanis International, has served at Lt. Gov. of -and of that organization. He was also connected with the Panhandle South Plains Fair. Mr. McMillan was born November 9, 1897, in Calvert, Parnell County, and attended public schools there. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1922, and come to Lubbock in 1925, when he supervised construction of the first unit of the Hotel Lubbock. During the next 33 years, he engaged in construction of many buildings in the Lubbock area. He is survived by his wife, of the home, 4901 19th; one son, William G. McMillan, Jr., two granddaughters, Shannon, 3, and Tracey, 14 months, all of Lubbock; one sister, Mrs. Jack Pate of Ocala, N. M., and one brother, Frank McMillan of Calvert. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the First Methodist Church in Lubbock, with Dr. Chess Lovern, pastor, officiating. Mrs. B. O. Mcwhorter Died Here Saturday
Katherine Henry McWhorter, beloved wife of B. O. McWhorter, mother of Ross and Owen McWhorter, died at the family home here Friday night after a year's illness, during which time mayo Brothers and other well known physicians were employed in an attempt to prolong the life of the great woman.
Mrs. McWhorter is known and loved in Lubbock and Lubbock county, where she has been a resident for more than thirty years, and her passing is the end of a beautiful life spent in bringing cheer and happiness, lending inspiration and beauty to the lives of those with whom she was associated.
It is depressing to know that ill health gripped the noble life at the passing of only forty five year, she being forty-six years a the time of her death, the past twelve months being a period of constant and heroic struggle to preserve the castle in which the great spirit was housed.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church, Rev. C. N. N. Ferguson spoke to those present, calling to their attention the beautiful character of the woman, and gave some history of her life on the Plains.

Albert Miller, of 2008 43rd Street, Lubbock, died at 7:40 a.m. Thursday in Lubbock, where he had lived for 3 1/2 years. The body will be in state at Blackburn-Shaw Memorial Chapel here from 6 to 8 p.m. today then will be sent to Denver for funeral services and burial. Hanna: Newton, J. Hanna died March the 18th at the home of his son, Mr. J. Q. Hanna, of Lubbock. He was 73 years, 2 months old. At about 35 years he married and reared a family of five children, four of whom still survive. The mother and one of the children having passed over some years ago. In his younger days he professed faith in Christ and became an honored member of the Methodist church.
As a Christian he was unassuming but enjoyed the confidence, love and respect of all who knew him. At 4 o'clock p.m. the 19th the writer conducted the funeral service at the grave and we laid his remains in the Lubbock cemetery to await the resurrection of the just. The floral offering was modest but rich and beautiful.
We expect to renew his acquaintance again in the sweet by and by. Quite a goodly number of friends and neighbors paid the deceased a tribute of great respect by being present at the funeral. For hope and consolation we would point the bereaved ones to our blessed Christ the Lord. I have conducted many, many funerals during my fifty years of ministry and the serious question always comes up: "Who will go next?" will it be me? or will it be you?

Pioneer Lubbock Mailman Dies; Funeral Tuesday (with picture)
James Marvin Norman, 72, a pioneer mail carrier of Lubbock, died at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday in Methodist Hospital.
Services for Norman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. W. E. Thorn, pastor, officiating.
After services here, the body will be taken to Kiker-Warren Funeral Home, Abilene. Following a chapel service there, burial will b e in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Alabama. Local arrangements are under direction of Rix Funeral Home.
Early Mail Carrier
Norman was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Association of Retired Civil Service Employes. Norman was the third mail carrier in Lubbock, going to work in 1925. He retired in 1958.
Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. W. A. Louis Jr., Tulsa and Mrs. E. E. Rodgers Jr., Midland; eight brothers, John W. Norman, 11502 37th St., E. J. Norman, Childress, E. L. Norman, Floydada, Louis Norman, Floydada, W. O Norman, Abilene, F. R. Norman, Abilene, T. A. Norman, Temple, and V. C. Norman, Amarillo; and a sister, Mrs. Wayne Gound, Big Spring.

Last Saturday Morning While Working In The Yard At His Home In Southwest Lubbock
W. E. PENNEY SUDDENLY DROPPED DEAD
He Was One of the Oldest Settlers of Lubbock County His Remains Were Laid to Rest in Lubbock Cemetery Services at the Family Residence.
A gloom was cast over Lubbock last Saturday morning when the announcement was made from the Penney residence that W. E. Penny was dead.
At first the report could hardly be credited as true but investigation soon revealed the fact that the report was sadly true, and that one of Lubbock's best and most highly esteemed and universally loved citizens had passed into the great beyond.
His death was very sudden, and therefore unexpected, as the day before he was down in town seemingly in the bloom of health and was in his usual jolly mood.
And in fact the morning before his death he has walked to the home of his son P. B. Penney a distance of several blocks and returned home without any complaint of feeling badly and after returning from the trip began to work in his yard raking weeds, which he had cut previously and when found he was stretched upon the ground dead. Just as though he had fallen and no visable signs of any struggle was noticed and it is supposed he had been seized with a severe attack of heart trouble, which we have learned since he was somewhat subject to.
OBITUARY
Mr. Penney was born in Lawrence District South Carolina, Oct. 27th 1843. He moved with his father to Georgia when only 7 years of age where he resided for many years and was married in Enharlee Georgia in 1864 to Miss Martha Barrett and was converted and joined the Methodist Church in 1865 of which he was a faithful member for years after which he joined the Baptist Church and lived a devoted christian in that denomination till the time of his death.
Mr. Penney moved to Texas in the year 1876 and located in Independence, Washington county, where he resided for twelve years then moved to Brown county where he remained 10 years, thence to Lubbock arriving here in 1899 being one of the oldest settlers in Lubbock county.
WAS IN CIVIL WAR
He served four hard years in the civil war, and was a true southerner and in his aged days seemed to enjoy talking of the olden times.
LARGE FAMILY
He was the father of a large family of children, 11 in number seven boys and 4 girls, all of whom are still living except one boy L. C. Penney, and one daughter, Mrs. J. R. Young. Those living and all present at his funeral were Mrs. J, E. Stokes of Tahoka Mrs. Cash Royalty, Mrs W. B. Powell, Messrs. P. B. Penney, R. E. Penney, J. S. Penney, R. T. Penney, E. B. Penney and J. E. Penney.
FUNERAL SUNDAY
Funeral services were conducted at the residence Sunday afternoon at three o'clock, after which his remains were followed to the cemetery by a large number of friends and there laid tenderly to rest to await the time of reunion when all shall gather around that Great White Throne to receive the reward of the faithful.

PHILLIPS, MRS. JERRY
Quanah, Dec. 6 (Special) - Final rites for Mrs. Jerry Phillips of Lubbock were held in the Church of Christ of Quanah at 4 p.m. Friday with the minister, Wayne Mickey, officiating; assisted by Rev. Horace Brooks, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Quanah. Interment was in the Quanah Cemetery with the Knowles Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Phillips, the former Marilyn Sue Davidson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Davidson of Quanah, died in a Dallas hospital last Wednesday following an illness of 10 days. She was born in Quanah on August 26, 1939, and graduated from Quanah High School in 1957. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Quanah. Shortly after her graduation she was married to Jerry Phillips. The couple was making their home in Lubbock where she was employed with the Lubbock National Bank and he is a student Texas Tech. PILLEY, G. W.
G. W. Pilley died at his home at Wolson Friday morning. He has been an invalid for some time and his death was not a surprise to his neighbors, who have done all they could to keep him comfortable as possible throughout his last days. Lineman Killed
Dickens, Tex. April 4 - A 7,200 volt electric charge killed a 24-year old REA lineman and seriously injured another in widely separated twin accidents in this area yesterday. Johnny William Haney, 24, of Spur, fell to the ground dead after contracting open high voltage lines. Seventy miles down the line, Alphy E. Pitts, also 24, of Lubbock, was hit by a similar charge. Pitt's life was saved by an alert co-worker, lineman Delton Green, who gave artificial respiration while the victim was atop the pole. (Sweetwater Reporter, Sweetwater, Tex. April 4, 1951)
REED, LUTHER
Funeral arrangements will be announced for Luther Reed, 34, of Lubbock by Austin Funeral Home. Mr. Reed died at 6:45 p.m. Friday in Veterans Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks. Mr. Reed, who was a World War II veteran and a Baptist, was born June 19, 1924 in Brazos County. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nealie Mae Reed of Lubbock; three sisters, Mrs. Jesse Stewart, Miss Charlie Mae Reed and Miss Alene Williams, all of Los Angeles, Calif., and five brothers, Gus Williams of Amarillo, Alfred Williams of Phoenix, Ariz., Wilton Reed of Fresno, Calif., and Cleveland and Alan Reed, both of Los Angeles. Shelbyville, Ky., Aug 26 - George W. Robertson, for many years a well-known farmer near Hempridge, in this county, died this morning at his home in Lubbock, Tex. He leaves a wife and six daughters, Mrs. Edgar Sleadd and Mrs. N. B. Waugh, of this county; Mrs. M. C. Overstreet, Miss Katherine Robertson and Miss Elizabeth Robertson, of Lubbock, Tex., and Miss Ione Robertson, of Louisville. The body is expected to reach here Friday evening. The funeral services will be conducted at the Centenary Methodist Church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock by the Rev. J. P. Strotoher, assisted by the Rev. B. F. Hungerford. ROE, A. J.
A. J. Roe, for thirty-four prominently identified with every movement tending to the upbuilding of Fort Worth, died at his home at Leuda street and St. Louis avenue Monday morning at 1 o'clock, following an illness of three months duration.
Following the building of the Texas & Pacific railroad westward, Mr. Roe came to Fort Worth from Dallas in 1876 to engage in the retail lumber business, in which he continued throughout his long business career. He at once saw that Fort Worth was to become a big city and twenty-three years ago erected his present lumber yard at Seventh and Throckmorton streets, which is now in the very heart of the city.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Jennie Marie, Adelaide and Mary Rose; a brother, Theodore of Colorado, Texas, and three sisters, Miss Mary Adelaide Roe of Fort Worth, Mrs. Frank E. Granger of Aberdeen, S. D., and Mrs. George A Johnson of Benecia Cal.
In addition to his lumber business in Fort Worth, Mr. Roe was connected with several yards in West Texas, as well as yards at Rhome, Weatherford and Colorado, Texas.
He was also the owner of several big ranches in West Texas, and was rated as a wealthy man.-[Fort Worth Telegram.]

RUSSELL, LILLIAN
Mrs. Lillian Russell died at her home in Bronte Wednesday of last week. Mrs. Russell was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Joplin of this place and her remains were laid to rest last Friday evening. Lubbock, Nov. 3--Final rites for James D. Shaw, 59, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, business manager, will be conducted Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Sanders Funeral Home Chapel here. Burial will be in Lubbock. Mr. Shaw, who had lived in Lubbock for 35 years, died Sunday at his home here, after suffering a heart attack. He was a native of Whitney, and a former resident of Crosbyton. A graduate of Tyler Business College, he joined the Avalanche-Journal organization in September, 1926, and became business manager nearly 28 years ago. He was secretary of the Avalanche-Journal Publishing Company. He was active in Masonic Lodge work, and served as commander of the Lubbock Commandery at one time. Survivors include his wife, Madge; a son, Rodney of Lubbock; three brothers, H. J. of Lubbock and Fred and R. L. Both of Amarillo; and three sisters, Mrs. V. R. Services for Claude B. Sherrill, 66 of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Thurday at Roosevelt Baptist Church with Rev. Joel Perez and Jack Thompson officiating.
Burrial will be in Resthaven memorial Park under the direction of Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home. He died monday, Jan. 20, 2003. He was born July 4, 1936 in Granite Okla. He served four years in the Army in Fort Hood. He married Vita Cate on Nov. 13, 1967, in Wichita Falls. He was a mechanic and employed by Texas Wrecker for 14 years. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and was a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Jimmy, Don & Bart.
Survivors include his wife; son Ronnie Ledbetter of Lubbock; five daughters, Elaine Braziel, Jackie Corwin and Beverly Sherrill, all of Lubbock, Lequita Carter of Brownfield and Brenda Sherrill of Amarillo; four brothers, Billy Ray, Gary, Michael and Charles; seven sisters, June Bowing, Laverne Ratke, Gail Esola, Colleen Henson, Vicki Miller, Charlene Russell and Sue Edwards; 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Vita E. Sherrill Services for Vita E. Sherrill 76 of Lubbock will be at 10:00a.m. Thursday at Canyon United Methodist Church with Jack Thompson officiating.
Vita passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014. She was born November 11, 1937, in Abernathy, Texas. She married Claude Sherrill on Nov. 13, 1867, in Wichita Falls. She worked as an assembly line worker at Grinnells for 25 years.
Vita was proceeded in death by her husband Claude Sherrill, and three sons, Jimmy Ledbetter, Don Corwin and Bart Sherrill. Her parents George and Millie Cate, two sisters, one brother and one grandson. Survivors include a son Ronnie and Betty of Lubbock; three daughters, Elaine and husband Boyd of Lubbock; Laquetta and husband Andy of Comanche; and Jackie and Beverly of Lubbock. SITTON, EARL M.
Earl M. Sitton, of Dublin, Texas, died here Thursday of last week following an operation for appendicitis which was made after the deceased had suffered for several hours with the disease, and his weakened condition was responsible for the inability to withstand the operation.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Sitton of Lindale, were notified and arrived in Lubbock in time to accompany the remains to Dublin, where deceased was laid to rest near the grave of his wife who died several years ago.

Lubbock Woman Killed In Crash
Littlefield, Tex., (AP)--Two highway accidents within three minutes, killed a Lubbock woman and injured seven other persons last night. Mrs. Homer Sullivan, 48, died in the crashes involving three cars. None of the injured was believed to be in serious condition. Highway patrolmen said a car driven by Sullivan, 50, struck another auto making a turn in front of him. They reported the third vehicle, with Don Tucker, 28, of Littlefield, plowed into the wreckage as bystanders sought to remove the Sullivan's. Sullivan and Tucker were among the injured. Edwin F. Summers, 48, of 3913 Lenwood, died Saturday night in West Texas Hospital in Lubbock following a brief illness. Mr. Summers was president of the Caprock Engineering Corp., a soft service. He had been a resident of Lubbock until 1928, then moved to El Paso, and then to Amarillo four years ago. He was a past secretary of the San Jacinto Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Christy, of the home address; three daughters, Che___ Summers and Mrs. Fidel Sanchez, of Los Cruces, N. M. and Ellen Gene Richard of Amarillo; and two sons, Ted Summers and Don Hilliard of Amarillo. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. today in the Funeral Chapel in Lubbock with the Rev. Don Davidson of the Asbury Methodist Church of Lubbock officiating. Burial will be in the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Fred Hanco*ck of Plainview; Allen Deville, Roy Alexander and Wes White of Amarillo; Dee Garner and Cliff Hardin of Lubbock. Mrs. Wm Tubbs Dead After a Prolonged Illness; This Much Loved Christian Lady Passes Away; Interment Monday. It becomes the Avalanches's painfull duty to announce through its columns the death of another one of our friends and greatly loved citizens, Mrs. Wm. Tubbs, which occured at the home of her daughter, Mrs C. A. Pierce in North Lubbock. Mrs. Tubbs had been a sufferer from a tumor on the left side of her neck for many years and although everything within medical skill was done to cure her, only temporary relief was availed, which kept her in fairly good health till about four or five months ago when the disease begin to spread and finally resulted fatal by her death last Sunday morning about ?:?? o'clock when she passed into the great beyond. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ben Hardy, pastor of the methodist church of which she was a faithful member, and she was buried in the Lubbock cemetery at 10:00 o'clock Monday in the presence of a large number of loving friends who deeply sympathize with the surviving member of the family, in the departure from earth of this kind mother faithful wife and loving sister. Services For Two In Crash Set Today
Funeral services for an Amarillo woman and her daughter, killed Monday in a car-truck collision near Vernon, will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 33rd and Indiana, in Lubbock. Mrs. Elizabeth Odell Whiteside of 3202 Julian, 39, and her 9-year-old daughter, Tanya Darlene, were killed in the crash which occurred on snow-covered slick pavement of Highway 287 about 12 miles east of Vernon. Mrs. Whiteside was a long distance telephone operator, employed by the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for the past 16 years. The Rev. David L. Zacharias, pastor of the Lubbock church, will officiate at the funeral. He will be assisted by the Rev. Dub Appling, minister of Forest Heights Methodist Church in Lubbock. Burial will be in Tech Memorial Gardens in Lubbock with services under the direction of Rix Funeral Home of Lubbock. Officers said the crash occurred when Mrs. Whiteside, on her way home to Amarillo, lost control of her late model car as it skidded on the slick road. The car slipped off the right side of the pavement, then swerved back onto the highway and into the path of a truck driven by Earl Carter Johnson of Dallas. Johnson was not injured. The cab of the truck rolled over, crushing the car, Tanya Darlene pinned in the wreckage was clutching a Christmas doll. Mrs. Whiteside's body was partially thrown out of the car. Mrs. Whiteside was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Amarillo. She is survived by her husband, John Whiteside of Lubbock; a sister, Mrs. Harold Taylor of Lubbock, and a brother, Johnny Reasonaver of Tahoka. WOODWARD, D. PROCTER
Lubbock, Texas, Oct. 23 - D. Proctor Woodward, brother of Dudley K. Woodward Jr of Dallas, died Monday morning. He had been in ill health for two years.
His Dallas brother is chairman of the board of regents of the University of Texas. D. Proctor Woodward, who was 79, was born at Indianola , and was reared at Taylor. He entered the wholesale grocery business at Weatherford, and later in Wichita Falls and Dallas. He later moved to Abilene and then to Lubbock, where he retired ten years ago. His parents were Dudley K. Woodward and Anna R. Woodward. He married Miss Neva W. Parker in Abilene. She died several years ago. Survivors in addition to his Dallas brother are three sisters, Mrs. Mary W. Doak, Lubbock, for twenty-five years dean of women at Texas Tech; Mrs. Max Eikel, Lubbock, now on the dormitory staff of the college, and Mrs. C. H. Brightwell of Galena Park. A service was read at Lubbock Monday afternoon. Then the body was taken to Abilene where funeral services will be held at the home of a sister-in-law, Mrs. George W.
