How are the Soundside Beaches ? (1)By: Kahlik

We are considering our 2009 rental. Although we always liked the "between the highways" section in Nags Head, I have noticed homes on the Soundside that have much of the same amenities that those homes have but a much lower cost. I have seen some homes that advertise being close to the Soundside beach. I am not familar with that side of Nags Head and I am wondering how much beach there is and how does it compare to the Ocean Beach. Thanks !

The soundside does not offer beaches except in a very very few places and those are not like the ocean beaches at all. Most soundside in Nags Head to Kitty is muddy swampy areas. Down around Salvo and south might be different.

There are some amazing views over the Sound, and there are some very nice homes that have them....and pools and hot tubs, etc. The Sound has some fun activities of its own....kayaking, fishing, crabbing, for example, and you're only a five minute drive to one of Nags Head's many ocean beach accesses.

There is a quiet sandy beach at the west end of Soundside Rd in Nags Head. The road forms the south border of Jockey's Ridge state park, there's a small parking area back there, and almost nobody visits it. The water is very shallow & usually calm, so it's always good for little kids. By late June the water is 80 degrees, so you can't exactly cool off in the sound.

That's one of the few I thought about. There is a nice area at the end of Windgrass in Kitty Hawk that not many know about.

HH - I'm not sure when you have gone by the parking lot but our home is in the subdivision next it and we frequently walk or ride bikes to the beach there. It's packed in the summer unless the jellyfish are out. It's a favorite place for the little ones especially if the ocean surf is up and too rough for them to go in. On red flag days everyone seems to wander over as well. Be careful not to stay past the locking of the gate or you'll have to wait till morning to get your car out. You can walk way out in the sound here before you get to your knees. Crabs and flounder can be seen moving along the bottom.

There are a number of rentals in our subdivision which is near the Jockey Ridge soundside beach access. A lot of folks like the sound to play in, especially with little kids. The area by Southridge is fairly hard sand. The negative vs. an ocean front is that you do have to drive to an access to enjoy the beach, but there are a lot of those in Nags Head.

When I've been there, it's usually at sunup, on the way to Pea Island. So I suppose I've missed the heavier traffic there and gotten a false impression!

Not really Tim. All of the sound fronts rentals that we've used really don't have a beach. Some sand (snad) yes. But beach, no! Some units down in Avon might have beaches that are "bulkheaded". But really, they're not beaches that most folks would expect.

i can't really speak for the nags head area. i am much more familiar with hatteras island, and there, it has been my experience, that sound side is much more plagued with 'skeeters than is ocean side. someone who knows the nags head area better should be able to advise is this is also true of NH SS.

The only "real" soundside beach on the outer banks is at Canadian Hole, down between Avon and Buxton. There is a little bit of space for you to "stake your claim" and spend some time, but Canadian Hole is more for kiteboarding. It is fun to wade out in the shallow water, though. I enjoy spending at least one afternoon on our trip at Canadian Hole kite flying. It is also nice for young kids, as the water is calm and shallow.

Wow .. Thanks for all the great responses !Thats why I love this board. I remember walking out onto the sound one year while walking a trail at Jockey's Ridge. The water was amazingly calm and the kids loved that they could walk out very far and the water still had not reached their waists. I didn't remember seeing an access by car there so I was curious if they did exist. Thanks again for the help.

Judy, I live soundfront in Brigands Bay and as long as the county keeps up with the mosquito spraying, as they did this summer, the mosquitos aren't much of a problem. I worked in Avon last summer and they were worse there along hw 12.Our home is no longer in the rental problem and as stated, many of the homes are bulkheaded, but many, like ours have ladders so getting into the sound isn't a problem.
