Question for Will/moderators | OBX Connection Message Board (1)By: bigdog

Will -- When someone asks where they should vacation, is it within the rules/guidelines to post a link to one's own house? It always has seemed to me that such a practice would turn the board into e-bay, and one could just as easily PM the person asking and give them private advice...but more and more I see this happening.I personally am not a rules person, but since this seems to be the week for throwing the penalty flag, what's the official ruling on advertising one's home within a post?

If people didn't want to know I don't think they would ask. Seems like it would be ok to send a pm to the poster but seems a little pushy to send the link or paste it here. JMO :smiley16:

As a renter, I would welcome the info- either a pm or a link in the post. I know I welcome all the help I can get when looking for a house!

Bigdog and all---as one of the parties who has recently posted a link to my own rental home, let me apologize if it is not cool to do so. I guess I figure that is part of why this board is here. I have done it just a few times: when the person asks, point blank, for a suggestion of a home in my property's area AND the other criteria they are looking for match it appropriately. I am sensitive that it should be posted only if it specifically fits as an answer or is a help to the question posted. I'm always truly just trying to be helpful. I would think that it's OK to do so if it is a direct match. I suppose I could send a PM, but sometimes in the flow of the thread, it just seems easier and better to respond in the thread. Also---I wonder if it makes sense to have a thread just for property owners. There have been times when I've wanted to ask about an owner service or resource, or ask other owners how they have handled a certain situation, and I haven't known if it's OK to do so on the main forum (and I must say---I've gotten some invaluable info when I have asked). It doesn't seem right to post this sort of thing on the local forum cuz I'm not a local! Just a long-distance owner. Thoughts on this??

Personally I don't mind when someone posts their own house or perhaps houses they know are in a specific area when responding to such an inquiry. Even though I'm not in the "market" for a rental home, I usually look at the links. It's nice to know what people are interested in and what is available. If it were on another thread, I would probably read it there too. Just thinking out loud.... feel free to ignore.

Personally, Im thrilled to find out which homes our OBC members own. I would certainly consider one of their homes first. Its a win-win situation since we know they are good renters and the homeowners win since they know they are getting good rentees. (is that a word??) This may go against Will's no solicitation rules, but I hope not. :smiley48:

I don't mind if someone posts their own home as long as it fits the criteria the person asking is looking for. Besides I think it's nice to find out which homes are owned by members.

I hear what you are saying bigdog, but I must say that I believe it is different to post the link to ones own house when answering a question. In addition, I like others, have posted links to many many houses that I know that weren't mine when I feel it to be a good match to what someone is searching for. However, it's a good question, I'll be interested to see Will's answer and I'll abide by his rules

Bigdog love your dog avator ( beautiful), with that said, why would anyone care, if a homeowner post a link, I think its great, i would rather rent off someone, you somewhat know. I respect the advice & opinons of others on here. I love looking at the homes. If you don't want to look, then just don't look. But don't take it away from people who do appreicate it. In fact, I think we will be renting from someone on this board this yr. haven't made our choice quite yet. But its a win, win for both. Sometimes I thing some people just have to complain about everytime. Who Cares!!! Bigdog I'm not aiming this reply to you, it just seems like alot of complaining & nit picking on here lately. I would never want to offend any of my obx friends on here. I love ya all. Yes, ish you have posted houses of others, that you throught were good matches, I think thats great. Its a big help. for us not living there, or as familiar with area. Thank You. Don't stop.

1) We seem to be a little, "rule happy" this week, so I thought I'd ask.2) Here's a link on this board for those members who choose to advertise their homes: Click to follow link...3) There is the possibility that it could turn the board into a point of sale site, instead of an honest advice site.4) I personally have found some overt links to people's local businesses, either in their signature, or via links they put in their posts cheesy....not offensive...just cheesy, since there are PMs and other ways to get the info to them without posting a free "ad"[Ish, this wasn't aimed at you (or anyone else in particular, for that matter), because, I've noted that you only answer when someone is looking for a house that fits the special description of your place (which is fairly unique).] 5) I've just seen this growing as a practice, and as we enter the real "house-hunting" season, I thought I'd ask Will the question, and I'll abide by the answer (meaning if he says it's OK, you'all will start seeing a link for my rental ) :smiley40:

I'm just saying that there is a difference between randomly advertising your home (not OK)....and responding to a thread question with a suggestion of a home that directly fits someone's request/criteria (should be OK whether it is your own or someone elses). People suggest certain plumbers, carpenters, electricians, artists, etc--whether it's their own business or someone elses. If we take all that away from the forum, I think we're letting a lot of people down that just are looking for quck advice.

Good grief, all we need is more forum police. We have mods already. I hope no more posters/owners feel pressure here to apologize. There is no need.

Owners are a problem for the RE cos. sometimes and I want to know who takes pride in their homes.

So you owners on here, bring it on,put your house in your avatar, profile, etc. and feel free to even show us a pic when you are proud of something you have done.

DON'T BE BULLIED, show us what you got.

Lets show him where the wine is to go with the "cheesy".

BogDog, I've never taken issue with it. There are a lot of Outer Banks vacation home owners here and I've never seen anyone abuse the forum for this purpose. I do agreee that it COULD become a problem and I will take action if it does. Personally, I think Ish has the right idea by just putting some info about his house in his signature. It's not obnoxious and it gets the message across to those who are interested. What I don't allow are unsolicited ads for vacation rentals. Those are removed as soon as I see them. Cheers,Will
